Are you new to Green Up Day? This is how it works:

  1. Grab green bags for collecting litter from Corinth roadsides. GREEN BAGS are at the Corinth town hall (front porch), Blake Memorial Library, Cookeville & East Corinth post offices, and Crossmolina Farm shop.
  2. It’s helpful, but not mandatory, to stake out the section of road you’d like to clean so that everyone’s efforts aren’t duplicated. So, use the BIG MAP and SIGN-UP SHEET to mark your choice of roads. The BIG MAP and sign-up sheet are at the Transfer Station every Saturday in April.
  3. You can pick litter anytime up until Green Up Day; traditionally, it’s done on the day itself. Last year, in addition to 224 green bags, Corinthians collected 42 tires and lots of other roadside junk (despite the rain)! Wear gloves and take care for ticks.
  4. On Green Up Day (Saturday, May 4), bring your litter-filled green bags and large roadside junk to the Corinth Transfer Station (8 – 1pm). We’ll take your bags and you can fill out a raffle ticket for each bag you bring in for a chance to win items noted above!

IMPORTANT:

  • Tires: 4 roadside tires maximum are accepted for free
  • Do not leave filled green bags on roadsides! You must bring them to the transfer station
  • Consider greening up Chelsea and Brook Roads — they need special attention!

There used to be a popular national slogan: Keep America Beautiful, that addressed our litter problem. You can help make America great again by keeping America beautiful. Take responsibility, take pride, and think before you toss!

2023 RECAP:

Despite a seemingly endless number of rainy days prior to Green Up Day, the skies cleared for the day itself, resulting in Corinth’s roadsides being free of debris, beer cans, tires, and other large junk! Due to the rain, the overall numbers were down a bit from last year, but we can still feel great about…

  • 105 Green Up Day volunteers (includes the helpers at the transfer station over five Saturdays)
  • ~70 miles of roads cleaned of trash in Corinth
  • 224 green bags hauled in
  • 42 tires from roadsides hauled in

These high numbers have been sent in to the statewide Green Up Vermont program to add to the state tally.

This year we had a tie on the person/couple with the most bags: Rick & Marian Cawley and Rob & Nancy Oliver each hauled in 12 green bags to win the coveted ‘Taste of Corinth’ Gift Basket (one basket was divided between them). And, 24 lucky winners received a prize from the raffle drawing! There was no team that signed up so no plaque this year.

Many thanks to Kai’s Cones for donating the buckets of yummy Hatchland Dairy ice cream and for Elliot and Zachary Lea who kept the suspense high while picking the raffle tickets!

2022 RECAP:

Green Up Day 2022-Corinth

Congratulations Corinth!! You’ve come through again … thanks to all the wonderful trash pickers, Bud Lite grabbers, and tire haulers we’ve set new records for our Green Up Day event!

Over 60 Corinthians brought 305 bright green bags to the transfer station this past Saturday, along with 39 tires that were strewn in ditches alongside our roads. Discarded rugs, flooring, mattresses, and unrecognizable junk filled the back of trucks and Subarus arriving all morning at the Transfer Station. Every roadside in town was scoured … our community signed up for 100% of the roadways on our Green Up Map!

We’re pleased to announce that the winner of the Taste of Corinth Gift Basket was Mark Nielsen! Mark collected 44 bags of cans, bottles, and trash, smashing all previous totals by any individual participant. Mark will be enjoying:

herbal tincture by Root Vine Healing
pizza voucher at pizza night from Crossmolina Farm
dozen eggs from Hop ‘n’ Goat Farm
bottle of wine from Montview Vineyard
gift bag by Moxee Art
4-pack of chocolate truffles by Hermits Haven
loaf of bread from Trukenbrod Bakery
cheese from Three Cow Creamery
pint of maple syrup from Sweet Bear Farm
bag of coffee from Vittles Espresso

This year’s group winner was the Ravenwood team, collecting 18 bags of junk from Corinth’s roadsides. They’ll see their name on a plaque on the FX Shea Town Forest kiosk.

Take advantage of the beautiful weather we’re having and go for a ride around Corinth. Thanks to you our roads are beautiful, enjoy them!

2021 RECAP:

We did it!! Corinthians set a new all time record for the amount of trash collected! You brought 243 green bags to the Transfer Station … over 1.6 tons of ugly litter that’s no longer strewn on our roadsides. In addition, 45 tires, a sink, a toilet, and a host of unknown bits and pieces of junk are no longer spoiling our view.

The winners who brought in the most bags will receive the Taste of Corinth Gift Basket and will enjoy a free pizza at Crossmolina’s Saturday Pizza Night, a bottle of Montview Vineyard wine, a dozen eggs from Hop and Goat Farm, coffee from Vittles Espresso, maple syrup from Kallberg Maple, cheese from Three Cow Creamery, and a bonus gift from Moxee Art.

This years group winners are new to the competition: the Vittles Espresso Gang filled 7 bags and will see their name on the 2021 plaque at the FX Shea Town Forest kiosk.

We’ve also picked 25 tickets out of the hat for our $10 gift certificates. If you’ve won you’ll be hearing from us soon.

Thank you everyone for a very successful Green Up Day. Enjoy the beauty of your town roads and know you did the work. Thank you, sponsors, for your generous gifts, your made-in-Corinth products are a great motivator.

See you next year!!

2020 RECAP – 50 Year Green Up Day Anniversary!

Congratulations Corinth!!! Once again Corinthians stepped up to the job, scouring our roadsides and collecting cans, bottles, tires, and all kinds of trash. The Transfer Station was busy the morning of May 30th as scores of folks dropped off their Green Up Bags and the piles of deposit cans and bottles they’ve been storing in their garage since early March.

This was the 50th Anniversary of Green Up Day and in the midst of the COVID19 Pandemic we faced some unique challenges. Although we did not set a new record for the number of bags collected our roads are clean once again … and the pride we all have in our community shows. Thank you for your efforts.

The most bags collected for a neighborhood group was once again a tie!! This time between the 2018 winners, Team Taplin and the 2019 winners Lost Meadow Gang (this year calling themselves the Durham Ditch Pickers) with 7 bags each. We’ll be putting up a sign at the Town Forest with both teams name this year.

The Corinth Conservation Commission would like to thank all of you for donating your deposit cans and bottles. We had a mountain of bags, boxes, and feed bags filled with 5 cent containers … many of which spent two months stored at your homes. All of the monies from the redemption center for this haul will be donated to the New Hope Food Bank … helping our neighbors in this time of need.

2019 RECAP:

Corinth had another record breaker with 210 bags and 44 participants! Other stats: 48 tires, 84 sign-ups. One resident brought in 19 green bags of roadside trash! There was a tie for group winners between Team Ravenwood Crew and Team Loftus, each with 7 bags. Glynn Pellegrino drew the Loftus name out of a paper bag. Someone dumped their personal trash beside green-up bags – probably not unusual, but Ken plans to talk to other GUD coordinators around the state to see how they deal with such things. Green up coordinator Ken Arkind hosted a celebratory BBQ at his home on May 18.

2018 RECAP:

Despite power outages across town, and many snow covered roadsides, Corinth broke the record for bags collected (161) and number of participants (54). We collected over a ton of roadside trash, including 2 toilets (complete with seats and hoses), a 6 foot step ladder and a few discarded outdoor children’s toys.

This was the first year we held the competition for the most bags collected. Everyone who dropped off their bags at the Transfer Station wanted to know who the leader was!! Congratulations to Team Taplin who brought in a record 25 bags!! Their accomplishment is now memorialized with a plaque mounted on the FX Shea Town Forest Kiosk.

As you know, Corinth has been participating in Green Up Day for many years. Our traditions include the large “Sign Up” map for everyone to claim a roadside to green up.  The map is rolled out on Town Meeting Day and moves about town, spending time not only at the Town Hall, but also at the Blake Memorial Library and at the Transfer Station every Saturday in April. Special green bags are available beginning in April, for Green Up Day which is always the first Saturday in May.
